Colleges Pushing For Increase In Students With Science And Engineering Degrees

Some states are faring better than others when it comes to engineering and science degrees. The US Census Bureau recently released information from an annual survey that for the first time included information about the types of college and university degrees residents on a state by state basis had obtained. The Census Bureau information shows that states such as New Jersey are ahead of the national average in engineering and science degree-holders, while states such as Ohio are behind.

President Barack Obama in 2009 established what's known as an "Educate to Innovate" campaign that encourages studies in science, technology, engineering and math. The subjects are key to the innovation that can keep the country an economic leader, an announcement on the White House website notes. The US Census Bureau's annual American Community Survey for 2009 included a new question that asked bachelor's degree-holders what their major area of study was.

Of an estimated 56.3 million people ages 25 and older with bachelors degrees at minimum, 36.4 percent held at least one science and engineering degree, according to the Census Bureau website. In states such as North Dakota and Mississippi, 28 percent or less of all bachelor's degree-holders older than 24 had obtained engineering and science degrees. Washington, D.C., at 51 percent, boasted the highest percentage of residents in this category with engineering and science degrees.

The Dayton Daily News and reported on the below and above average rankings in Ohio and New Jersey respectively. In Ohio, some 31 percent of the state's 1.9 million degree holders ages 25-plus had obtained engineering and science degrees, the Dayton Daily News article noted. In New Jersey, engineering and science degrees accounted for 37.4 percent of the degrees held by the state's 2 million-plus degree-holders older than 24, according to the article.

Students have a variety of subject areas in which they can specialize when pursuing engineering and science degrees. In engineering alone, students can study toward becoming anything from civil engineers who plan, design and build projects such as airports, bridges, government structures and water treatment facilities to biomedical engineers who develop health products and systems such as MRIs and automatic insulin injectors. Graduates with engineering degrees in 2009 commanded most of the top entry level salaries, information from the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Working toward degrees in science, students might study geology and hydrology, where they could search for natural resources such as in-ground drinking water supplies or petroleum, or environmental science, where they might work to clean up the environment.

Pennsylvania's Award-Winning Science in Motion

STEM makes headlines every day--a definite education priority from the highest levels of government on down. The goal: invigorate the teaching of science, technology, engineering, and math in our middle and high schools and raise America's academic standing in the world.

Like many others, President Obama has been quite vocal about the shortcomings of STEM teaching and our students' lackluster testing performance, hence the government's push for improvement.

Initiated an annual White House science fair.
Launched his "Educate to Innovate" campaign, a nationwide effort to move America's students up from the middle of the pack in math and science.
Challenged scientists, engineers, educators, the private sector, and governors to join him in a national campaign to engage students in STEM fields.
Given a competitive edge to states that commit to improving STEM education in his Race to the Top grant contest.
Recently honored about 100 outstanding middle and high school math and science teachers from around the country at the White House.
Applauded the grassroots National Lab Day initiative intended to revitalize science and math education and lead to increased American competitiveness.

And as he has said, "Passionate educators with deep content expertise can make all the difference, enabling hands-on learning that truly engages students-including girls and underrepresented minorities-and preparing them to tackle the 'grand challenges' of the 21st century, such as increasing energy independence, improving people's health, protecting the environment, and strengthening national security."

Despite such good intentions, however, there's been no apparent trickledown effect when it comes to the award-winning Science in Motion program.

Science For Kids - How to Answer Their Questions

Science instructional standards indicate that the best way to develop science for kids is to ensure the curriculum.

Children are inherently curious and subsequently tend to ask LOTS of questions, such as "Why is grass green?", "How big is the moon?", 'What is a virus?", and a multitude of others for which we may not have an immediate answer. Still, it is important to foster an environment where kids are allowed to be curious as this is often their motivation for learning.

Developing activities in science for kids that directly answer their questions can be difficult. However, with a library of high-quality educational DVDs on hand, we can answer questions immediately, and accurately, at the same time providing that instant gratification to which the kids of the information age have become accustomed. Waiting, while we develop a lesson plan or search textbooks for the answer is not an option.

When they ask about earthquakes, you can pop in an educational DVD on United States earthquakes and all the science related to the topic. You could even incorporate a Social Studies lesson on the locations most prone to earthquakes. Or, when they ask how many planets there are, you can actually play an educational video showing a simulation of how the solar system came to be.

Educational DVDs on science topics can help answer a child's question visually, making it much more likely he will retain the information. Science for kids can include educational DVDs on earth science, biology and life sciences, physical sciences, and be used for inquiry-based science exploration. Step-by-step scientific experiments can be shown, including detailed explanations. This is sometimes even more effective than the real lab exercise.

Teaching Kids to Love Science and Rekindling Our Fascination in the Process

Teaching our kids to love science can help them become clearer thinkers and better persons. A sustained interest in science will not only help them as children (in school or in play), but will also aid in their development as adults, allowing them to function well in any field of work and to be happy and successful in their lives. The best way to engage our kids in the wonders of science is through educational toys.

Science is important; we were always taught that in school. But as adults, with all the preoccupations we have to deal with in real life from our jobs to our domestic obligations and our personal affairs and financial concerns, we tend to forget just how important science is. Because of the everyday problems and mundane tasks we have to deal with, we may find that science has little relevance in our lives. What we fail to see is that a sustained fascination with the workings of the world and a constant love for science and technology can actually lead to a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

We need to rediscover the joys of science to truly teach our kids to love science. Kids learn the most by imitation and what they see in the actions and words of adults (especially their parents) they tend to file in their little heads as a matter of importance. Buying them children's educational toys is one way to make them value learning; showing them how interested we are in the world and are fascinated with science is another way of affecting their minds for the better.

Liberty Science Center - Reinventing the Science Museum

From its unique approach to engaging people in real science, to its goal of positively influencing communities to take action to improve our world, the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City has been re-invented to enhance educational travel and inspire student groups in scientific literacy and understanding.

Science museums first appeared in the early 1800s, with a focus on collecting, researching, and presenting artifacts in an attempt to understand the past. In the 1960s, science museums sought to entertain and engage their audiences - increasing scientific literacy and understanding. Today, many science centers are focused solely on interactivity. The newly reinvented Liberty Science Center has placed its efforts on encouraging actual science activism, acting as a resource and catalyst to advance the realm of science, technology, and society.

Enhanced by its historic and cosmopolitan location, which overlooks Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Science Center strives to inspire student tours in understanding the continuing connection between scientific advances and how they improve the human condition.

For instance, the center's "Live From...Robotic Surgery" program uses live teleconferencing to take students into the O.R. where they interact directly with surgeons and witness how the advances of science and technology benefit humans. Program offerings include topics on cardiology, neurosurgery, and kidney transplant. Other programs include lab workshops in a state-of-the-art laboratory where students embark on an interactive learning experience led by a knowledgeable science educator.

Renaissance Science and a 'Fair Dinkum' Australian Politician

Some people mourn an aspect of political candour that existed in Australia during the era of the 20th Century's political struggle to ensure educational opportunities for the working class. A sense of Australia 'doing right' to 'get somewhere' or to 'forge ahead', existed in contrast to the 21st Century's 'spin doctoring', with its continual reference to various complex financial graphs and charts. The Australian term 'fair dinkum' was a colloquial expression used to denote an opinion that was genuinely held with no reservations. 'Fair Go' was associated with the making of reasonable judgemental policies and the term 'using your Nous' was another popular term, referring to using one's common-sense. Master tradesman often exhorted their apprentices to use their Nous to solve problems.

A fair dinkum Aussie Pollie, in that bygone era, used his or her Nous to ensure a fair deal, and such a person became a well respected Australian politician. The Australian Federal Minster, Simon Crean, had earned such a reputation, along with the rough and tumble criticism from those who put profits ahead of all else. Simon Crean devoted his life creating educational opportunities for fellow Australians, be they unemployed tradespeople or those engaged in fields of higher education.

Simon Crean has become a pivotal figure in ensuring that Australians get a fair go to become acquainted with the development of an entirely new science of chemistry. This medical science, now established by three 1996 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, is emerging onto the world stage, in complete defiance of the 20th Century's fixed life-science world-view. Australia, thanks to Simon Crean, holds a prominent position within its great futuristic global potential, in which the importance of the Platonic tradition of Greek philosophy, to fuse ethics into the Nous, is of paramount importance within the functioning of the new chemistry.

During 1995, as the Minister for Employment, Education and Training, Simon Crean's Department investigated an application by the Science-Art Research Centre in Australia to become An Australian Government Approved Research Institute. A major Australian University's assessment for the Government claimed, that while the Centre's work was not factually erroneous, it was inconceivable. The scientific hostility toward the Centre's work was such that its mathematical life-force theories, reprinted in 1990 as one of the 20th Century's important discoveres, by the world's largest research institute based in Washington, the IEEE SPIE Milestone series, was treated with hostile contempt in Australia.

The Educational Visit to the Science Museum

It's great for kids to go to school and get an education, but there are some things that you just can't learn when you're sitting at a desk, especially when you're bored. I'm sure that, as a parent, you can remember having that feeling as a kid and you can relate to your child on that level. That's why it can be good to break up the monotony now and then with educational visits to various places.

One fabulous place that you could visit with your child is the science museum. There, you can find exhibits on many different aspects of science. For example, you and your child might see an exhibit on various rock formations. You might also see an exhibit on how the weather works.

Now, if you visit a different wing, you might see the history of various species. Your kids will be in awe of the dinosaur skeletons and figures of woolly mammoths and so forth. That can be a great scientific history lesson.

In another part of the museum, there might be hands-on exhibits that teach things like how electricity works or why certain chemicals change colors when mixed. The possibilities are practically endless.

Science Fair Projects - An Important Part of Science Education

The classroom experience is an important part of the way a student learns new material, but it is by no means the only part. In the rush to make sure that students are properly educated, it is easy to get caught up in the more obvious, typical, ordinary aspects of learning and to forget about some techniques which, although they are not used quite as frequently, have every bit as much value and are one hundred percent as vital as any of the other more commonly seen ways that we teach children in a modern classroom setting.

You see, when students get together in a classroom with a teacher, the primary purpose of that gathering is to transmit information from the teacher to the student. All of the information that the teach communicates on the given subject is already known and established, and he or she is simply telling the information to the students so that they will know it as well. In other words, nothing new is being created or pursued; instead, something which is already known is being transferred from one place (the teacher's mind) to another place (the mind of the student).

One other way to do things is actually to set about discovering new information in the classroom. In this manner students and teachers can embark together on a process of discovery where neither the student nor the teacher knows what might happen at the end. This is very different from the way things are normally done because it really seeks to add to the amount of existing knowledge in the world instead of just spreading it from place to place. One really great way to pursue knowledge in this way is through a science fair, where students will create science fair projects.

Incredible Science Toys and Kits

Most of the children around the world are not interested to learn science because they need to learn these topics from their regular books and some other formats. To resolve this issue, most of the schools in America are starting a new concept of teaching science to their students. However, it is also an important to the parents that your child must have a love towards learning science. If you are encouraging them early by doing science projects with the toys and kits, they will try to learn science which lasts a life time. Every child would like to discover the world and nature around them in childhood days. In these childhood days, it is a better idea to teach your children with science toys and kits. There are so many well designed incredible science toys and kits are available in the present market. These instruments will definitely increase the interest of learning to your child. And also these equipments are designed to understand the environment in a better way.

The most important science toys for your children are chemistry and physics sets. The price range for these kits is starting from twenty dollars to two hundred dollars. There is a wide range of options available in these science kits when you are trying to purchase them. When in comparison with the physical kits with chemistry kits, the chemistry kits will be a small high, because of the cost of the chemicals used in these kits. However, most of the parents need to consider about the chemicals used in these kits according to the children safety. When the children are doing these experiments, they must follow the guidelines and safety precautions which are described in manual. Moreover, you need to consider that these chemicals are depleted. So, you need to refill the gadgets with proper instructions and chemicals.

An Essential Way to Teach Science Projects

There are a lot of differences between the science and scientific. Science means it is a core set of toys, but the scientific means experiments with the science. If your student or children are unable to understand the experiment, the best solution is experiments with science kits. There are so many science stores around the country are offering these kits for an affordable rate. With these kits, your student or children will improve knowledge in science. These kits are well equipped and designed for the understanding and interested way to the children about the different scientific disciplines.

If you want to tech your students about the electronics, electricity and also radio station functions the best and suitable example is crystal radio set. This project is very popular and consists of one project to make a crystal radio. With these science kits, you can teach your students not only science some other subjects like biology, astronomy, ecology and some of the other subjects. You can conduct some of the experiments like why the sky is blue and how the lights bend some other experiments, which will create a positive knowledge in your children. Some of the professional scientist has done these experiments to discover the mysteries of the earth. Apart from regular toys, these experiments are much better. With these experiments, the children will learn the real science, and it improves the imaginations at both school and real world. After these experiments, the children will think differently about the world around us. The children will become curious about the science rather than accepting.

Another advantage is that knowledge obtained through this science experimentation is retained longer by students is because they are actively participated. They cannot simply skim through the experiment, they have to make sure that they are doing experiments correctly, and the only way to ensure that is by understanding what is going on. It forces students to understand the science behind what they are doing, and if they do not, often times the experiment would not turn out right.

Educate and Amaze Your Kids With Science Toys

There was a time when getting kids really educational toys was something that every family did. Each year around Christmas or on my birthday I could always expect presents of books and science toys of some kind. It's rare to see kids getting presents like that now - even though they'd have great fun with them and learn so much.

So what actually makes a science toy a science toy? Anything that leads a kid to discovering new for the first time or seeing a law of nature of the Universe play itself out in front of them would be a good way to define it. This type of tends to make kids more curious about other aspects of science and nature so you'll educating them without them even knowing it. This is something you really want to encourage with your kids - the idea of active learning. Making their learning interesting is a huge key to success.

So what kind of science toys are there to choose from? You can start with something simple like a slinky spring or a basic chemistry set (child safe), then you have the option of a junior microscope or a robotics kit. If they're more biology inclined kids then you could get them an anatomy kit. Or how about an ant farm? Or one of those volcanoes that actually erupts. The really big one is telescope for the little star gazer in your family. I still have memories of sitting in our back yard when I was a kid staring up at the moon through my dads telescope.

Encourage Your Child's Natural Curiosity and Make Education Fun

Keeping children interested in their education is a struggle that's faced parents for generations. While some children love going to school and have a genuine thirst for knowledge, others see learning as something they're forced to do when they'd rather be playing.

Science toys are a great way to stimulate children's natural curiosity, and to keep them entertained while learning about science and nature. In fact, with science toys, children can have so much fun, they may not even realize they're learning something new.

This addictive toy has been a favorite of bored executives for many years. Gently raising then releasing one of the end pendulums will cause energy to travel through the three static centre pendulums, before pushing the final pendulum outwards. When the final pendulum comes back, the process is repeated over and over, teaching children about the conservation of momentum and energy.

Dip the Drinking Bird's beak into a glass of water, and he'll carry on drinking for hours. A popular curiosity in the 60s and 70s, the Drinking Bird demonstrates a variety of physical laws including the combined gas law, the ideal gas law, the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, the heat of vaporization, torque, center of mass and capillary action.

Science Supplies Fostering an Interest in Science

Children are natural scientists, always discovering and absorbing new things. Parents can help their children by supplying them with the appropriate science supplies so that they can make a better sense of what they see in the world. Science is trying to explain what you see. Parental involvement in anything; be it sports; school supplies or some hobby is the real key to success for every child. When education supplies are involved a child will set off in new directions with an exceptional level of confidence.

Children are full of questions. Life is a library of new information for them to go through a day without wondering about something. You should not only be receptive to their questions at all times, but you should go as far as to encourage them to ask. Taking your child seriously and listening with respect is crucial to learning.

Parents often have the false notion that they need to be a science expert themselves, or have answers to all of their child's questions. The fact is, it is constructive to make the science subject easier and interesting with the science supplies. There are different kinds of supplies available on the market for the better understanding of the wonderful subject. These are Science Boards, Science Equipment, Life Science, Human Anatomy, Health & Nutrition, Microscopes & Magnifiers, Nature Studies, Environment & Weather, Charts, Lab Equipment, Optics & Light, Slide Strips, Project Boards, Science Kits, Space Science and Science Fairs & Experiments. Science is all about experimentation and discovery. And, these supplies will demonstrate the value of learning new things.

Incredible Science Toys and Kits - Easy to Learn Science

In these technology days, it is one of the easiest tasks for children to learn science quickly. Most of the children would like to do their science experiments with some incredible science toys and kits. Science is one of the easiest subjects to learn with these science kits. And here one thing to remember that science is different from scientific.

Obviously, the science experiments involve with great project group discussion, which often lead to toy science fun. There are so many stores situated at the country are selling these incredible science experiment kits, which are made by some esteemed manufacturers are presented in an easy way. And also with the design of these kits, your children will learn some incredible facts about the different scientific disciplines. For example, with a single experiment with these kits, so many children would be able to understand the atmosphere conditions around our planet.

After the completing the experiment, your children will amaze about these kits. And also it will help them to learn science quickly, and also it is very much useful in their future research and education. There are various types of kits available like chemistry, biology, ecology, astronomy and some other various fields of experiment kits. It has been observed in various American schools that so many children are easy to learn that why sky is the blue, cause of rains, bending lights and some other experiments that also reveals the mysteries of earth.

Gender Differences In Learning Style Specific To Science, Technology, Engineering And Math

There are gender differences in learning styles specific to science, math, engineering and technology (STEM) that teachers of these subjects should keep in mind when developing lesson plans and teaching in the classroom. First, overall, girls have much less experience in the hands-on application of learning principles in lab settings than boys. This could occur in the computer lab, the science lab, or the auto lab – the principle is the same for all of these settings – it requires an overall technology problem-solving schema, accompanied by use and manipulation of tools, and spatial relation skills that very few girls bring with them to the classroom on day one in comparison to boys.

Let’s look at some of the reasons why girls come to the STEM classroom with less of the core skills needed for success in this subject area. Overall, girls and boys play with different kinds of games in early childhood that provide different types of learning experiences. Most girls play games that emphasize relationships (i.e., playing house, playing with dolls) or creativity (i.e., drawing, painting). In contrast, boys play computer and video games or games that emphasize building (i.e., LEGO®), both of which develop problem-solving, spatial-relationship and hands-on skills.

A study of gender differences in spatial relations skills of engineering students in the U.S. and Brazil found that there was a large disparity between the skills of female and male students. These studies attributed female student’s lesser skills set to two statistically significant factors: 1) less experience playing with building toys and 2) having taken less drafting courses prior to the engineering program. Spatial relations skills are critical to engineering. A gender study of computer science majors at Carnegie-Mellon University (one of the preeminent computer science programs in the country) found that, overall, male students come equipped with much better computer skills than female students. This equips male students with a considerable advantage in the classroom and could impact the confidence of female students.

Learning Science With A Smile

Who ever said that you couldn't combine business with pleasure was a total idiot. Why is that so? It is so because being serious, at the same time having fun, is possible. Science is always thought to be a highly serious subject, but still, your children can enjoy while exploring those scientific discoveries and innovations.

Children nowadays seem to have a dam around them when it comes to telling them to do their homework or to study. Oftentimes you just can't persuade them to concentrate on their studies because they are just too busy playing with their toys. To save you from further frustration, educational science toys were invented. This way, your children not only learn from the things that are taught, but they also do so with big smiles on their faces due to utter enjoyment and pleasure.

Crime Lab Investigation is an example of an educational science toy for it lets your child enjoy the job of a crime investigator. The mental capacity of your child will be enhanced, for this toy lets your kid examine evidence by using forensic science to be able to solve certain cases.

Another educational science toy is the Weather Center Science Fair Project. With this educational science toy, your child can get to learn all about the various kinds of weather conditions, with regards to temperature, wind speed, wind direction, total rainfall, and many more. This complete weather tower storage system is self-contained so that you can mount it outdoors on any sort of pedestal. Your kid will definitely have fun while exploring the science of weather.

Religion, Science and Education For a Better Society

Human beings have evolved as pattern-seeking animals. We perceive sequences of events and we see shapes and objects seemingly organized in particular ways, and we tend to want to find a reason for that often-apparent level of organization. We see random sequences around us, and we have devised mental mechanisms that allow us to see them organized in patterns. This mechanism helped our ancestors better cope with their natural surroundings and potential dangers such as a pair of menacing eyes staring from within the foliage, but did not equip them with the tools to discern when a pattern actually exists and when those patterns just seem to exist. Thus, we think we see faces on Mars, dogs and dragons in the night sky, or the image of the Virgin Mary on the glass windows of an office building reflecting a distorted image of a nearby tree.

The individuals that learned how to cope with their environment were the ones that survived long enough to reproduce. That way, they managed to pass along important and useful information to their offspring in the form of orally transmitted tales. As a consequence of this, we have evolved as story-telling animals that pass along our perception of reality to our offspring. We tend to create myths to weave together these apparently purposely created shapes, patterns or sequences of unexplained phenomena in an effort to assign meaning to them. We have evolved a belief engine which has given us the tools to look at nature and find explanations for everything, ranging from why the sun seemingly rises every morning and apparently revolves around us, to why it rains, where we come from and where we go to after we die. These beliefs-and many more-are grounded on a long tradition and history in which generation after generation passed them along to their offspring. They gave people comfort and sometimes helped them survive by making other people aware of dangerous animals or places. Most importantly, they created a sense of community for those people that shared the same beliefs, thus making them stronger as a group in the face of a hostile environment.

Renaissance Science and Education's Cult of Fear

Maria Montessori, the molecular biologist Sir C P Snow and the engineer Buckminster Fuller, warned that modern science must be reunited with the Classical Greek life science Humanities in order to prevent the destruction of civilization. They stressed that the obstacle preventing this was an inadequate understanding of the second law of thermodynamics. Fuller balanced that law with his synergetic biological energy derived from the Classical Greek world view. Fullerene fractal logic has now been used to establish a new life science in defiance of the present fixed world view. Fuller considered that the catalyst for avoiding oblivion would be via the Arts. It can be argued that the Western educational system is actually preventing the new balanced understanding of the second law, which Montessori referred to as the greed energy law, by employing a culture of fear, in particular concerning the second law of thermodynamics.

Firstly, the existence of a more general culture of fear within the Australian educational system is now a common knowledge concept. Leading up to the June, 2010, removal of the Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, allegations of organized greed within the educational system concerning billions of dollars allocated for the construction of school buildings were continually reported by the national newspaper, The Australian. On June 30th a front page story reported that a 14 million dollar task force established to investigate the issue was unlikely to hear complaints about the schools stimulus program from 110 NSW principals. The investigation team could not offer those principals "anonymity" and they were consequently silenced by a "culture of fear", emanating from the NSW Education department.

Science and Education - Brain Limitations and Development

There is a big part in the human brain whose functions are totally ignored. The human brain is an organ that even the scientists of our time have not completely understood, and most of the scientific information that is accepted today as true, is in fact the result of theories and speculation.

This huge part whose functions are ignored is the part that belongs to the wild side of the human conscience. This side is violent and evil because it was formed without organization. Only the human conscience is organized according to human characteristics and is civilized, as was discovered through a research made in the human psyche through dream interpretation.

The wild conscience is an animal, and it is selfish and cruel. It is in fact demoniac. This is why the human being is so cruel and violent and we observe the existence of terrorism, violence, crimes, prostitution, vandalism and many other horrors in our society and in all of human history.

The craziness accumulated in the wild side of the human conscience is immense and untameable. We must prevent this dangerous content to invade the human conscience or to eliminate its domination when it already started to destroy the human conscience after invading it.

Since this content exists and the wild conscience, which I designate the anti-conscience, is constantly trying to invade the human side, our conscience doesn't have the chance to develop as it should because this evil content is always impeding it. The wild side provokes many disturbances in the human mind and behavior when it manages to destroy a big part of the human conscience.

Library Science - Available Online Education Options

The information inside a library has to be correctly managed and maintained so individuals can use it. Students can step into careers as librarians after completing the appropriate training. Available online education options for library science can provide students with the chance to gain undergraduate and graduate degree training in library science.

Online education can be gained at the undergraduate study. However, for students that want to become librarians an associate's or bachelor's degree program will only act as a prerequisite to the required graduate training. To enter a master's degree program in library science students need to have a bachelor's degree. Students have two educational options to choose from when preparing for a master's degree in library science.

Online training at the associate's degree level provides students with the knowledge to enter assistant positions inside a library. Students work through two-year programs that develop their knowledge of how libraries are ran and what tasks are to be completed by assistants. The daily operations are broken down to teach students how to correctly maintain the circulation desk, carry out reference research, and appropriately use library equipment. Coursework is designed to prepare students to understand how to manage and categorize information. Depending on the program, students may be able to study specific areas such as library technology or children's services. Further education at the bachelor's degree level deepens students' knowledge of the field.

Students that complete an online bachelor's degree program gain an in depth education that can be applied to careers or graduate training. The modern library is broken down so students can understand how to correctly organize the media inside several different types of libraries. Library administration as a whole is learned and students are able to focus the rest of their courses on a particular area. For example, students that are interested in museum work can tailor their education to learning how to manage that type of information. Other possible areas include corporate, medical, school, and military libraries. Resource management, classification, media selection, and database usage courses are some subjects that will prepare students for the field. Students that don't continue education can become technicians and associate librarians.

Educational Videos Support Lesson Plans For Science

Arne Duncan, the U.S. Education Secretary, made the bold announcement that he wants to launch a new era of science education. He hopes in this new era, students will be able and encouraged to ask the tough questions that challenge the answers. He also intends for this new era to bring more specially trained teachers specializing in the areas of science and math into the classroom. In essence, this is his lesson plan for science and math in the 21st century.

While these are bold and admirable statements, the true question is whether or not this can be accomplished within a system that has been identified as broken. In his speech at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) conference, Duncan argued that Obama has identified the need for inventors and engineers - along with poets and scholars - and will ensure that scientific research is kept immune to the political agenda.

New education funding included in the stimulus package accounts for more than $100 billion. Duncan would not say how much was set aside for science, but did promise that funds would be set aside for modern labs. Such upgrades in the nation's schools would go a long way toward improving the lesson plan for science, but there are other tools available today that can improve performance now.

Duncan talked of this historic opportunity to lay the necessary groundwork for a generation of educational reform - but in truth, reform has been going on in this country's educational system for more than 40 years. Will raising the standards, establishing comprehensive data systems, increasing teacher quality and more satisfy the reform need and push past current barriers?

Duncan is hitting on critical truths that can be addressed in the classroom. When quality teachers prepare the lesson plan for science, quality education can emerge. Many of these teachers recognize the value in educational videos and how their use can engage their students, opening up a world beyond the four walls of the school and inviting them to experience new situations and understand new concepts.

A School Trip From Bermuda Takes a Science Tour of Orlando

Often teachers will approach me with a general idea for a trip to a certain destination. I work closely with educators to customize tours that reflect their curriculum and provide fun and interesting sites on the itinerary.

Heather Stevens is school Coordinator for Overseas Educational Tours. She is a Para Educator for pre-kindergarten through fifth graders at Purvis Primary school in Bermuda. She needed guidance and ideas for an educational trip to Orlando. Stevens wanted her students to visit Walt Disney World, and engage in the study of science.

Walt Disney World in Florida has some excellent science-focused educational programs in their Youth Education Series (Y.E.S.). There are some specific programs geared towards the science student: Synergy in Science (Epcot Center), Wild by Nature (Animal Kingdom), Seaworld Education Program and Physics - Energy & Waves (Magic Kingdom). Disney World exhibits are used as examples of the direct application of technology and science. This hands on learning experience is fun and educational for students.

$250 Million Effort Illustrates Need For Better Science Education

Recently, the President announced several new public-private collaborations that would make investments of more than $250 million to help train more than 10,000 new math and science instructors and provide additional training to more than 100,000 existing teachers. There is a determined push to employ teachers who can assertively and enthusiastically educate in the area of science.

"Passionate educators with deep content expertise can make all the difference," President Obama stated in a prepared speech, "enabling hands-on learning that truly engages students -- including girls and underrepresented minorities -- and preparing them to tackle the 'grand challenges' of the 21st century such as increasing energy independence, improving people's health, protecting the environment and strengthening national security."

American students' rankings in science continue to plummet compared to various other nations, which does not bode well for our ability to innovate and compete in the future. All of this points out that our educational institutions are still failing to properly educate kids in the science and math they will need to be successful in their adult professions. There is a need to use engaging science materials at an early age, particularly for those who educate privately or at home.

Inspire Budding Scientists On An Educational Visit to Paris

For budding scientists, time spent in the classroom and the lab is extremely important; but learning about how science has been connected to culture and politics throughout history, and how society and science continue to have a tight-knit symbiotic relationship, can be incredibly inspiring. An educational visit is the perfect opportunity for students to explore such connections. Paris, as a leading city of innovation and discovery in modern European history, is one of the most fascinating destinations for such a trip. Here are just a few of the attractions that will intrigue and excite young learners:

As Europe's largest science museum, this will make a great feature on any educational visit itinerary. Nestled at the heart of the Cultural Centre of Science, Technology and Industry, in the Parc de la Villette, this is a museum dedicated to enhancing knowledge and curiosity - particularly in young people, the scientists of the future. It contains a planetarium, interactive teen-oriented learning areas, and an IMAX theatre. Visiting students will be able to explore historical advancements as well as new ideas, and will hopefully come away with a deepened passion for the subject and its importance in the world.

One of the figures that cemented Paris's place on the scientific map was Marie Curie, still celebrated today for her work on radioactivity. Modern lovers of science can visit the place where it all began, at the Curie Museum - originally the laboratory built for Curie by the University of Paris and Institut Pasteur in the early 1900s. As both a monument to her work and discoveries and a repository of information about the history of science, this is a must on the itinerary of any science-oriented educational visit. The museum's exhibits trace the story of radioactivity and the ways it has been used in science and medicine. The star feature, though, is Curie's reconstructed chemistry laboratory. Learning about her life, work and legacy (the Institut Curie continues to build on the foundations laid by her research) is bound to provide inspiration for young visitors with a passion for science.

Educational Trips to Explore the Art and Science of Paris

As the largest city and capital of France, Paris is just a short hop away from the United Kingdom and makes for an exceptional place to go on educational trips for a taste of the art and science that makes the city what it is today. With a history that dates back over two thousand years, exploring Paris and its surrounds can seem to be a monumental task for educational trips to the city, but it is easy to manage the wealth of information and culture if you focus on a few key sights or topics.

While in Paris, it is hard to ignore the arts. World famous museums, such as the Louvre, are around every corner, but if you have a little time and want to get a more in depth look into a museum, consider a visit to the Musée d'Orsay. Don't neglect the sciences, either, which have a background that can be explored when you visit the Cité des Sciences.

Situated on the left bank of the Seine, the Musée d'Orsay literally cannot be missed. It is housed in the former Gare d'Orsay, which is a stunning Beaux-Arts train station that was built between 1989 and 1900. The building itself was completed just in time for the Universal Exposition of 1900 and the station remained one of the most important stations in France until 1939 when the short platforms became an issue for the longer trains. During the 1900s, the station was used as a film location, by auctioneers, and as a theatre company before the building was saved from destruction and opened as a museum in 1986. Educational trips here will reveal its history and heritage: it was designed to bridge a perceived gap between the collections of the Louvre and the National Museum of Modern Art. The resulting museum is light and airy and known for its extensive collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works of art with names that everyone will recognise - such as Monet, Degas, Manet, and Van Gogh, just to mention a few.

A Career in Library, Education, and Training Fields

Contrary to popular opinion, a career in library science of training is not, as it was considered, the province of those older females who have no prospects, of the lonely bookish man. These are for nearly anyone who enjoys reading, helping others to learn and grow and who likes the challenge of meeting new people and new situations on an hourly basis.

Library science and education is a challenging field with a great deal to learn to provide for a career there. In the United States, the American Library Association and the Organization for the Advancement of Library Employees advocates the improvement of salaries and conditions for nearly all library workers. This means that at times they are not paid what their education and work efforts are worth strictly speaking.

The average salary for a librarian in 2006 was about $51,000 with salary ranges from $22,000 to $250,000 at the upper level. Educational requirements for librarians are about the same as for a teacher or instructor with some minimal differences dependent upon which area of library science or which type of librarian you wish to become.
